The award came during a small panel held by producers Mark Burg and Gregg Hoffman, Saw VII 3D driector Kevin Greutert and Jigsaw himself, Tobin Bell. To date, the Saw films have accumulated over 730 million in worldwide boxoffice gross, and sold 30 million plus dvd units. For a genre that spawns copy cats and straight-to-dvd sequels, it is an impressive feat.
"The Saw films are pervasive in cuture now," said Bell. "We've got everything from an annual blood drive to a famous Sopranos reference."
The fans in attendance were treated to about eight minutes of brand new 3D footage from the upcoming and final iteration in the series. Apparently the writers and producers had this story-line and moment in mind since way back in Saw II, and this ultimate set of traps was always the natural goal, a la Lost.
The opening scene was another crazy moral choice followed by puncture wounds, so I doubt the movie will break any new ground from this formula. And the 3D rendering wasn't very impressive, and I forgot it was there during some parts.
But! Cary Elwes, who played the original Jigsaw victim Dr. Gordon, is back this time around to give some closure. Score!
